Select Board debates who should present motions at May town meeting

Select Board · Meeting of February 2, 2026

BOURNE — Select Board debates who should present motions at May town meeting. The five-member board and Finance Committee met jointly to discuss whether the Select Board or Finance Committee should make motions and provide verbal explanations at the May 4 Annual Town Meeting. Town Administrator Marlene McCollem said the current arrangement, in which the Select Board makes motions while the Finance Committee only votes, creates a closed system undermining the Finance Committee's chartered role as fiscal watchdog.

Select Board members Azarovitz, Siroonian, Meier, and Chair Ferretti voiced support for restoring the Finance Committee's traditional role. Finance Committee members were divided, with Chair Sullivan suggesting the Finance Committee make motions and basic remarks while staff provide additional explanation if needed. The board tabled a final decision to the next meeting.
