BOURNE — The Bourne School Committee voted unanimously to send a $4,895,435 middle school roof replacement and a $50,000 plow truck request to the fall town meeting warrant. Staff presenter Jordan told the committee the Massachusetts School Building Authority will reimburse 48.27 percent of eligible costs, leaving the town responsible for "between like $2.5 and $2.6 million." The committee also closed out its fiscal 2026 budget, returning $4,380.58 to the town after carrying over $533,573.34 in encumbrances. Chartwells food service director Chris Cushman said he removed ham, bacon and hot dogs from school menus after a Board of Health letter, saying "if there's anything we could do to make it healthier for the kids, I'm all for that." The budget and facilities subcommittee reported the district is running 16 bus routes this year, down from 18, due to a driver shortage.
The committee also discussed a new state law, the PROTECT Act, requiring a policy on interactions with federal civil law enforcement, with a vote planned for October.
