K9 nonprofit seeks Bourne's OK for a first-ever 5K race walk honoring police and military dogs.

BOURNE --

COMMUNITY -- The Select Board heard a request Aug. 4 to use town roads for a 5K race walk benefiting the K9 PTSD Research Center, an organization that cares for retired police and military dogs. According to the application before the board, the event is planned for Oct. 8, 2026, and would be the nonprofit's first race of its kind; organizers said they had considered holding it off Cape before choosing Bourne.

James Lamont, who runs the K9 PTSD Research Center in Seekonk, addressed the board along with a supporter who said the organization is opening a second campus in Bourne "later this year or early next year." Proceeds from the race would go toward the nonprofit's care of retired police and military dogs, and organizers said the event would include awards presented to canine heroes of the Commonwealth. A supporter told the board that retired K9 Nero, shot in the line of duty and treated by veterinarians in Bourne, could be honored at the race if the application is approved. The board did not take a recorded vote on the request during the portion of the meeting reviewed.
